A "SPECIAL WAY OF CARING" From
small beginnings, a vision was realised. A group of concerned community
members led by Mary Beattie, Dr. Rocke Robertson, Bobby Rose and Brig.
Gen. Harry Wenz were the driving force behind the idea of forming Dundas
County Hospice which became a Registered Charity in November 1992. In
September 1992, A Hospice Awareness Night was held at Park Lane Seniors'
Support Centre with Barbara O'Connor, Executive Director of All Saints
Hospice in Ottawa, speaking to about 100 people about Hospice's role in
providing care for the dying. In December 1992, 11 volunteers completed
the first Hospice Volunteer Course. The initial fundraising project of
the DCH was "Light up a Tree" in honour or memory of loved ones
at Christmas 1992. The First Annual Hospice Banquet and Auction was held
in June 1993, and has evolved into our major fundraiser, the popular "Hoedown". Over
the past 10 years approximately 120 trained and dedicated volunteers have
volunteered 20,000 hours of visiting, fund raising and board time. Hospice client, Carole Boettger describes her Hospice experience this way: "Hospice looked after me spiritually and physically by sending two special people to chat and support me. Hospice is always there to support me, phoning to check on me and keeping track of how I am doing. The support that Hospice has given in all areas has added to my quality of life. The people you have sent my way have become dear friends and I value them so much." One of carole's visiting volunteers, Robyn Lane, expressed her feelings in this way: " As Carole and I navigate our journey through the stresses of dealing with Carole's struggle to live with cancer, we have shared a whole gamut of emotions as we try to make sense of it all. Carole has profoundly enfriched my life by teaching me how to live fully in the here and now, and how to cherish what is important. Reina
De Jong, Coordinator since 2000 comments: "I am so proud to be a
part of this special community of caring. The volunteers with different
skills and talents create an organization with a reputation of being respectful,
compassionate and caring. Our clients teach us each day what the real
priorities are in life".

Hospice Activities This year we have introduced a new program to Clients that are mobile and in need of a day away. A safe and supportive setting for people with a life threatening illness is provided allowing them to meet, share, relax and have fun. A nutritious lunch is served and various activities are offered including: massages, foot and hand care, art therapy, nutrition counseling. Volunteer Facilitators Tracy Lewis and Chris Clapp organize and co-ordinate meetings for anyone experiencing loss. Many topics are addressed i.e.: tips on coping, journaling, meditation, etc. Guest speakers are invited and video presentations are used. We accept referrals for one on one support as well. We offer a Hospice/Palliative Care Course annually, primarily for visiting volunteers. This is also a great opportunity to create awareness and educate our community. We are proud to announce the graduates of the 2002 course: Carol Barkley, Micheline Boudreault, Bert de Bruijn, Marilyn de Bruijn, Sandy Empey, Joanne Jarvis, Kim Little, Lesley McDonnell, Betty Merkley, Japke Tibben, Pauline Van Kessel. Over
an 8 month period, caring and enthusiastic volunteers have given approximately
2000 volunteer hours to 65 clients. With the increasing numbers of referrals,
we are always looking for new volunteers to help in any way, whether it
be visiting clients, office work, fundraising, board members, special
events support, speakers, etc. Our volunteers are caring, kind and giving
people. "A kind word, a gentle deed - lifts the spirit of those in
need."
