What is Hospice?

The word HOSPICE once meant a house of rest for travelers. Today, hospice means a philosophy of care. Dundas County Hospice recognizes the uniqueness of individuals and their families, and how life-threatening illness affects them. Its compassionate care is directed at improving their lives physically, emotionally and spiritually. There is no charge for our services. We provide, with the consent of the patient:

We take a team approach to ensure that people have the information and the care they need. We work closely with physicians, hospitals, Community Care Access Centers, and religious communities.

Anyone can make a referral, ie; family members, doctor, nurse, friends, neighbours, etc.

Dundas County Hospice volunteers are special people who are warm and caring, and offer emotional support. Our volunteers are screened and interviewed, and complete training programs. They report regularly to the coordinator, work in co-operation with other staff and are given support and education. The volunteer may act as a companion to a patient and provide practical assistance such as reading, light meal preparation or just listening. They provide respite for family members by staying with patients.

If you or your organization would like to learn more about palliative care, issues related to life-threatening illness or the work of Dundas County Hospice please call us. Our speakers would be pleased to talk to your group.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HOSPICE CARE?

Any person, adult or child, and their families, at any stage of a life-threatening disease. Dundas County Hospice accepts referrals from anyone. Examples include health and social agencies, nurses, physicians, clergy, friends, or clients and their families.
